The Philadelphia Flyers have been much better than anyone could have expected in 2023-24, and now veteran Head Coach John Tortorella has shocked the NHL world by naming a new captain.

Sean Couturier becomes Captain No. 20 for the Flyers

After a fantastic stint to start his career in Philadelphia, the Flyers have now officially handed Sean Couturier the C, making him the 20th captain in franchise history.

Couturier becomes the first player to wear the C since Claude Giroux back in the 2021-22 season following 10 seasons as captain, with Couturier following on from great names such as Chris Pronger, Eric Lindros, Dave Poulin, Bobby Clarke and others.

Unsurprisingly, GM Danny Briere was ecstatic to have finally made this move for the deserving Couturier.

"Sean Couturier is an ideal choice to be the next leader of the Philadelphia Flyers," said Flyers General Manager, Daniel Briere. "Sean was drafted here and has made Philadelphia his home. I have personally seen his development from a responsible forward to one of the best two-way centermen in the game and a playoff performer. The adversity he has had to overcome has only strengthened his proven leadership. In this New Era of Orange with Dan Hilferty, Keith Jones and John Tortorella at the helm, we couldn't be more proud to call him captain."

After spending the last 13 years in Philadelphia, Couturier couldn't contain his excitement about captaining the only franchise he's ever known in the NHL.

«It's such a great honor. It's a really prestigious organization so this makes it even more special. This city is my home and I love it here,» said Couturier. «It's going to be business as usual for me. Nothing is really going to change from me or my game and how I approach things. I love my teammates, how we have grown as a group and I want to make sure we keep going on the right path here.»

This is a well deserved honour for a team that's been playing well in 2023-24, and now we see if this mid-season jolt can continue Philly's push for a playoff spot.
