Karlsson has yet to appear in a pre-season game for the Penguins, and it appears that was his plan all along.
During an interview, Karlsson stated that he feels good and that playing on opening night was always the goal, hinting that he never intended to play in the pre-season for the Penguins.
It appears that Karlsson was just being cautious about his injury, which he suffered while training in the off-season, potentially indicating that his intensity during off-season workouts was a little too high. Thankfully, he appears ready to go for opening night.
Karlsson joined the Penguins last off-season after a 100-point season with the San Jose Sharks and had a lot of hype around him in Pittsburgh, getting a chance to play with superstars such as Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin.
Unfortunately for the Penguins, their Powerplay was at the bottom of the league, which severely reduced Karlsson's point total to 56 while playing all 82 games, disappointing numbers by his standards and numbers the Penguins would surely like to see increased in the 24/25 season.
The Penguins open up their regular season on October 9th against the New York Rangers, a powerhouse regular season team and a division rival for the Penguins. Karlsson will look to start his season off strong as Pittsburgh fights to get back to the playoffs for the first time in 2 seasons.
With the Penguins' core aging rapidly, this season will be a critical one for Karlsson and the Penguins, as he looks to stay healthy and push for his 4th Norris trophy.
