The captain is set to become a free agent and it's all but clear what the future has in stock for him. At 34, he just had a 81-point season, showing that he can still play a key role for a team.
In interviews, he often shared that he wants to stay with the Lightning. But unfortunately, it's not that simple. Even if general manager Julien BriseBois also wants to keep him, it might be complicated to navigate under the cap space; considering the Bolts' recent acquisitions.

According to him, the Lightning's GM wants to focus on Stamkos, and prioritize his contract negotiations over Victor Hedman's, who still has a year on his contract, but will become eligible to sign a new deal on July 1st.
The reporter also added that BriseBois plans on starting to negotiate with Stamkos around the start of June.
