Toronto Maple Leafs had Greg Harden as their performance coach for the past three years. The man was influential in several sports, and sadly he passed on Friday at 75 years old after being diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. His passing has sent shockwaves into the sports world.
According to reports, Greg Harden, a popular Michigan athletic administrator credited with helping Tom Brady rise to stardom, died after complications from surgery earlier this week. Michigan University released the sad news in a statement.
The Leafs, who hired Greg Harden before the start of the 2021-22 season, are "deeply saddened" by his passing. He was brought in after one of their most crushing playoff defeats, losing to the Montreal Canadiens in the first round despite being up 3-1 in the series.
In a heartfelt tribute, the Leafs shared their condolences online.
Away from his dealings with the Leafs and Tom Brady, Greg Harden also coached other elite clients such as Michael Phelps, Jim Harbaugh, Jalen Rose, and Desmond Howard.
Former head coach of the Maple Leafs Sheldon Keefe mentioned that Greg Harden was an absolute "beautiful soul" who had a tremendous, positive impact on the team, citing how he supported and helped others.
Greg Harden is survived by his wife Shelia, sister Lynette, and children Brian, Victor, and Olivia. Our thoughts are with his family and friends over this tragic period.
