We are one month away or so from the start of NHL training camps, and Ryan Reaves of the Toronto Maple Leafs is on the verge of losing his roster spot.

GM of the Leafs Brad Treliving was busy this off-season adding depth to the roster, and now that the Leafs have potential prospects that could be ready to crack the line-up, such as Easten Cowan and Fraser Minten, two players in particular are at heavy risk of losing their jobs on the team, and that's Ryan Reaves and possibly even David Kampf.

Kampf is expected to be a solid fourth liner on several teams in the league, but there is likely no fit for him in Toronto, especially with his salary. In his most recent season with the Leafs, Kampf played in 78 games and only managed to score eight goals and add 11 assists.

Reaves on the other hand, is at risk of being replaced by an emerging top prospect, He had a very rough season for the team last year, as he only played 49 games, sitting as a healthy scratch for many other ones, and only scored four goals, with two assists. Yes, Reaves did play very physically and stepped up to protect his teammates, but the Leafs need someone that can do more than just that.

Craig Berube is going to be put in a very tough spot trying to figure out which players make the cut and which ones don't, and if it's determined that Kampf or Reaves are the odd ones out, that's when Treliving is going to have to step in and execute a trade.

«Since Berube played a similar role to Reaves during his NHL career, he might have a soft spot for the bruising forward and what he brings to the team. Then again, he's a professional who is likely able to avoid making emotional decisions.»

Leafs next 2 moves:

Leafs trade Nick Robertson and Ryan Reaves to the Anaheim Ducks for Brett Leason and a 3rd round pick.

Leafs sign Matt Martin and Alex Nylander to one year deals.

It's never a bad thing to have healthy competition for roster spots at training camps, however it is sad to see a player, especially one who has been around the league for a while, lose out to someone who has never played an NHL game before. Reaves better be ready to go at training camp, as he has some serious impressing to do.
