Maple Leafs working to bring in Shane Doan's son from Utah

The exact details of the trade would see Toronto sending disgruntled forward Nick Robertson to Utah for Josh Doan. It seems simple enough, however it is a little more complex than what meets the eye.

Nick Robertson still hasn't been signed by the Leafs and remains a restricted free agent (RFA). He has not been very consistent and has dealt with quite a bit of injuries. Robertson has stated he wants out of Toronto because he wants more playing time, and it's going to be tough for him to get that with the Leafs due to how many star forwards they already have on the roster. He would definitely be able to shine on a weaker Utah team.

Josh Doan is set to be paid only $925,000 next season and would bring physical play and grit to the Leafs. He would fit in well on their bottom two lines to start, with the potential to grow and become a top-six forward down the road.

The Leafs currently have just over $1 million in cap space, so Doan's salary would fit in just perfectly under the cap ceiling. Robertson wants more than $1 million, so if the Leafs were to sign him, they would likely have to make moves in order to fit him under the cap, which is a much bigger headache for GM Brad Treliving to have to deal with.

Josh Doan only played 11 games for the Arizona Coyotes last season, but he did manage to remain close to a point-per-game, as he had 9 points. Nick Robertson on the other hand, played 56 games for the Maple Leafs and tallied 27 points.
