The Toronto Maple Leafs are gearing up for a huge trade deadline, and according to a Sportsnet analyst, that may mean moving one of their top prospects.
This season has been a great one thus far for the Toronto Maple Leafs, and given their potential, there are very high expectations once again heading into the Stanley Cup Playoffs in 2025.
Before that can happen, however, they've got some big decisions to make ahead of the trade deadline, with Sportsnet's Justin Bourne making some huge predictions for the next few weeks in Toronto.
However, the biggest of all was regarding their top prospects, with Bourne noting that he believes one or the other will be on the move.
«The Leafs don't need a deadline where they add a couple of bottom-six grinders and a seventh defenceman. It's a Weird Year, without any clear favorites, and the Leafs have as good a chance as any other team. They need to separate themselves with a bigger move.
Again, they don't have a ton of assets, but to acquire a real player they'll have to give someone up. Minten is a guy who would get another team excited (he can play in the NHL today and is, at worst, a very high IQ two-way third-line center). Cowan is the higher upside, higher risk on the downside play, so you have a prospect who would suit just about any selling team's fancy.»
While giving up one of their top prospects isn't the ideal move for Toronto, their lack of moveable draft picks may force their hand, and with the team potentially targeting a middle-six center to fix their issues down the middle, it may ultimately lead to one or the other being moved.
It's certainly not going to be a popular move, but with some huge contracts up this off-season, Toronto has the chance to push for a deep Stanley Cup run in 2024/25, and if moving one of their top prospects gets it done, then ultimately, that's what General Manager Brad Treliving will have to do.
