The Toronto Maple Leafs believe they've found a star in Matthew Knies, and now the 23-year-old has opened up on his ongoing contract negotiations with the team.
The Toronto Maple Leafs inked two huge deals a year ago by locking in Auston Matthews and William Nylander, and now, they've got some more huge decisions to make.
Not only do Mitch Marner and John Tavares hit free agency in the summer of 2025, but standout forward Matthew Knies will also be an RFA, meaning the team will be eligible to hand him a huge extension.
All has been quiet on that front for some time, but now the 23-year-old has broken his silence, when asked about a potential new deal, he didn't seem to be interested in talking about it, rather he is focused on the current season and he can do to help his team.
«I don't focus on that at all. It didn't affect me when I was in college and deciding. I'm just focused on what I can do to become a better player. I don't care about points or fancy plays.
I just want to help this team win at all costs. That's the value I can bring to the team. There are still improvements I can make, but there's a lot of hockey ahead of me.»
The former second-round pick put up 35 points in 80 games played a season ago, and with 11 goals and 19 points in 35 games this season, it's clear that he's already improving at the NHL level.
With some potentially huge deals about to be handed out by Toronto, it would make sense for them to lock Knies in soon to a long-term deal, so don't be surprised to see a deal get done at some point in 2024/25.
