Former Maple Leafs player Carlo Colaiacovo shared his thoughts on the Leafs' situation with Marner yesterday on TSN1050. He revealed that Marner is going to be looking for a sizeable raise on his next deal, which may not make any sense for the Leafs, especially with Matthews and Nylander already signed to massive extensions.
"What if the people that love Mitch Marner, love Marner as a player at the salary he is making right now or less than that and not at the salary he is likely going to command in free agency which is somewhere between $11.5 and $13.25 because that's the Toronto salary that he's put himself in."
This is likely why the team has reportedly looked into trading him. However, according to the most recent reports, Toronto Maple Leafs general manager Brad Treliving would rather sign Marner to an extension than trade him. This is a huge revelation, one that could alter the direction of the Leafs for years. This information comes from NHL insider Darren Dreger. However, other insiders have put out contradicting information.

Frank Seravalli revealed weeks ago that he believes the team intends to trade the superstar winger this summer. More recently, he re-affirmed his convictions, stating that the team will effectively force Marner into a move.
Only time will tell which of these insiders are correct, so be sure to stay tuned this summer to see what the Leafs do.
