It is not clear if Mitch Marner will still be with the Maple Leafs after next season, but the superstar winger will certainly get a big payday on his next contract.
Former Maple Leafs player Carlo Colaiacovo shared his thoughts on the Leafs' situation with Marner yesterday on TSN1050. He revealed that Marner is going to be looking for a sizeable raise on his next deal, which may not make any sense for the Leafs, especially with Matthews and Nylander already signed to massive extensions.
"What if the people that love Mitch Marner, love Marner as a player at the salary he is making right now or less than that and not at the salary he is likely going to command in free agency which is somewhere between $11.5 and $13.25 because that's the Toronto salary that he's put himself in."
Frank Seravalli revealed weeks ago that he believes the team intends to trade the superstar winger this summer. More recently, he re-affirmed his convictions, stating that the team will effectively force Marner into a move.
"I think the Leafs are going to make a play and basically back him into a corner over the next three weeks, saying, 'Mitch, it's been great, but we're moving on. So whether it's now or eight months from now, your time's up.'"
Only time will tell which of these insiders are correct, so be sure to stay tuned this summer to see what the Leafs do.
