Breaking news in the hockey world, as Leafs GM Brad Treliving has inked Steven Lorentz to a PTO, thus giving him a chance to impress during training camp and make it onto the team roster. The insider scoop was tweeted first by Elliotte Friedman.
Last year, Steven Lorentz lifted the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers. Everything was quite different in the regular season, however, in just 38 games played, he notched only three points with one goal, but stepped up a bit in playoffs, matching his total in 16 games, including two goals. One of those goals came in Game 3 of the first round against the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he gave his team a crucial two-goal cushion with ten minutes left.
Originally drafted 186th overall by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2015, Steven Lorentz has played for Carolina, San Jose, and most recently, Florida. In his career, he's appeared in 230 games, putting up a total of 43 points, 21 of those being goals.
He can now invade his haters by carving a role out for himself on the Maple Leafs fourth line. However, it won't be easy. With Max Domi likely centering the third line and David Kampf anchoring the fourth, Steven Lorentz will have to bring his A-game to impress management and coaches. One fan on X even suggested he might slide in on the wing of the fourth line and could very well make the line a more defensive juggernaut.
A fun fact: Steven Lorentz, originally from Kitchener, Ontario, celebrated his Stanley Cup win in nearby Waterloo this summer. He even shared a throwback photo of himself as a kid in a Maple Leafs jersey, posing with the Cup. Talk about a full-circle moment!
