This season has been a solid one for the Utah Hockey Club, as they've come into the NHL with plenty of hype and have pushed hard early in the year, but as of right now, they continue using the Utah Hockey Club moniker.
That's one they're desperate to shed ahead of year two, with the team reportedly favoring the name Utah Yetis ahead of the off-season that they'll likely change their name, but now, they're run into some trouble on that front.
According to Elliotte Friedman, the team is having issues trademarking the Yetis name, but they are working hard to overcome that or find a suitable alternative to that choice.
Reportedly, the trademark has been denied because this is too close to the famous YETI brand of drinkware, coolers, and bags, with the trademark office noting that adding 'Utah' to the front doesn't change it enough to warrant the trademark.
Other names that were finalists for the name were Outlaws, Blizzard, Mammoth, and Venom, and while it was clear that Ryan Smith and the ownership group wanted Yeti, it appears now that they'll have to pivot moving forward to one of the other top choices.
As of now, only time will tell whether or not the team will pivot or continue pushing for the Utah Yeti name, but with the team desperately wanting to change their name heading into the 2025/26 season, we'll likely see them called something else moving forward, with plenty of intriguing options to choose from.
