Alex Ovechkin has one year remaining on his five-year extension with the Washington Capitals, yet his career in the long-term is up in the air.
With unfinished business in the NHL, he already indicated he would be more likely to retire with his hometown Dynamo Moscow of the KHL.
Ovechkin started his professional career in Dynamo, making his way up in their academy system after four in the Russian Super League.
Dynamo's president, Viktor Voronin, said in a TASS interview he would be willing to negotiate a return to the KHL when his existing NHL contract runs out after next season's 2025-26 season.
Sitting in his advisor's position for Dynamo currently, Ovechkin has stayed close to his old team, even suiting up for Dynamo during the lockout of the 2012-13 season in the NHL.
He is a regular in attendance during the offseason, having been there to hand over a jersey to their junior team last offseason.
Beyond winning a second Stanley Cup in Washington, Ovechkin is set to break the NHL's all-time mark in goals. With 26 in his first 39 games of this season, he is on his way to surpassing Wayne Gretzky in April.
Since the Capitals overhauled their team under head coach Spencer Carbery, nothing of his post-NHL career has been mentioned regarding Ovechkin.
The team in Washington, though, has done just fantastic this season, sitting nine points ahead of everyone in the Eastern Conference after playing 55 games.
