Relocation has been such a hot topic in the NHL as of late, and with all the talk about Winnipeg and Arizona, the potential move of the Washington Capitals has gone very overlooked. Despite being a staple in the city of Washington, the owner of the Capitals and the NBA's Washington Wizards recently unveiled a grand plan for a new arena, set in North Virginia.
Now however, it has been revealed that this potential move has been completely shot down, due to the contract that the Capitals signed to get their current arena, Capital One Arena in Washingon renovated.
According to a report, the owner of the Capitals Ted Leonsis signed a deal back in 2007 that helped the team get $50 million worth of renovations done, and in doing so, locked the team into a deal in D.C. for 40 years. Despite their desire to leave, D.C. Attorney General Brian Shwalb has cited the contract signed almost 17 years ago, contending that the team now must remain in the city until 2047, even with all the plans they've put together.
With one Stanley Cup in their time in Washington, it appears the city and the team will be connected for a long time to come, and while some aren't fans of either team staying in the city and would welcome a move to new pastures, there's simply nothing they can do about it.
