1000-Game Veteran Admits He Wanted To Fight Matt Rempe In His First Game
In a recent interview on national TV, veteran Matt Martin admitted he wanted to drop the gloves with Matt Rempe in Rempe's very first NHL game.
Martin Admits To Wanting To Drop The Gloves With Rempe
Before Matt Rempe was a household name for dropping the gloves in his very first game, the Stadium Series, Matt Martin, the Islanders veteran enforcer, admitted he wanted to be the first person to get a piece of Rempe.
In a recent interview on TNT, he said the following:
"Obviously, I knew he got called up and was familiar with his game and what he brings. And in an outdoor game, you're expecting him to be fired up and looking for one."
"They scored right away, so I was looking. Like you said, I was ready to just, you know, thinking it was going to happen at some point, just play the game. But they scored right away and I wanted to get momentum back and obviously, we went. It was a good fight. Credit to him as well. It wasn't just me giving him one, there was purpose behind it from my team as well."
Martin And Rempe's Bout
At the time of the fight, Rempe had zero NHL experience while Martin had 1015 games, between the regular season and playoffs, under his belt. Rempe made it known that he was not going to back down, handling Martin fairly easily.
Since then, Rempe has gone on to fight numerous other times and has even gotten suspended for his antics.
