The leagues leading goal scorer will miss Sunday nights game against the New York Islanders with an injury he has apparently sustained in Saturday nights win over the Ottawa Senators.
Sheldon Keefe had this to say to the media:
«Auston's got a minor injury I'd say at this point, It's out of an abundance of caution. We'll give him the day off, assess it from there and take it from there.»
This passed week Matthews missed a practice on Monday for maintenance but that apparently does not have anything to do with this current injury which Keefe said took place during the win over Ottawa.
It's important to note though that the injury can't be too serious as Matthews played 23:19 minutes of ice time in that game. I am sure if the Leafs were in a fight right now for a playoff spot, that Matthews would be playing. With only 7 games remaining in the regular season, and the Leafs already securing a playoff spot, this is just a precaution for the 58 goal scorer to make sure he is ready come playoff time.
