Gary Bettman's recent declaration that the NHL was thriving has been contradicted by recent developments. Two major broadcast partners are experiencing significant issues, creating complications for the league.
Yesterday, news surfaced that the marketing teams for the Seattle Kraken, Pittsburgh Penguins, and Vegas Golden Knights will have their hands full due to an announcement by Warner Bros. Discovery.
According to insiders, Warner Bros. Discovery has informed professional sports teams whose games are carried on three of its regional sports networks that it plans to exit the business and stop operating the channels. These three networks were part of WarnerMedia's assets, which Warner Bros. Discovery acquired from AT&T Inc. Teams were sent a letter on Friday warning that the business will not have sufficient funds to pay upcoming rights fees, which are expected to be due by late March.
The letter proposes that AT&T SportsNet transfer ownership of the networks and programming rights to the teams for no purchase price consideration beyond a release by the teams of any future claims against the networks.»
