Earlier today, the Boston Bruins made a major move in a final attempt to keep an important free agent on their roster.

Bruins Place Reilly on Waivers

Boston has officially put Mike Reilly on waivers to buy out his contract.

"The Bruins are buying out the final year of Mike Reilly's contract. The buyout will free up $2.66M in cap space for 2023-24, $1.33M penalty in 2024-25."

Reilly played 339 NHL games with Boston, Ottawa, Montreal and Minnesota. He spent most of last season in the AHL, where he scored 26 points in 36 games.

Desperate Move to Keep Free Agent

This is a strategic move by Donald Sweeney. He needs money to sign other players, including Tyler Bertuzzi. After trading away Tyler Hall, he might have enough to do so.

It's been reported that negotiations have happened and there's an agreement on the salary, but not on the contract length.

"Word floating around is the #NHLBruins and soon to be free agent Tyler Bertuzzi have an agreement on salary per season but no common ground on contract length."

Tomorrow, he'll be UFA and the Bruins could lose him for nothing. More developments are expected before the opening of the free agents market.
