Alexis Lafreniere has had a shaky start to his NHL career, as the former QMJHL phenom has struggled to find a solid footing in the NHL as a scorer. Playing for a stacked Rangers team, with plenty of depth on the wings, Lafreniere has only been given so much room to succeed, and a change of scenery could be beneficial to him.
Canucks Want Lafreniere
According to trusted insider and reporter Rick Dhaliwal, the Vancouver Canucks really like Lafreniere, and want to make space for him in their lineup this summer. With some notable veteran contracts likely on the move this summer such as Myers, Garland, Boeser, and Miller, the Canucks could look to swing a trade for Laf at the NHL Draft.
«Lafrenière, they really like him
They're going to try and create cap space
Myers, Garland, if there's something there for Boeser, Miller
You're gonna hear these names at the NHL Draft again.» - Dhaliwal
Who Could Go?
The Canucks are right against the salary cap and will have to move multiple players out as they seek to execute a retool. Depending on who the Rangers are interested in, we could see a package for Lafreniere including any of the formerly mentioned veteran players, a first-round pick, and even a prospect such as Aatu Raty.
Players like Garland and Boeser could really find their groove in New York and could be the pieces that push them over the edge as contenders. Meanwhile, the Rangers could keep the cost relatively low by taking on Tyler Myers' albatross contract.
