Don Cherry, the former host of Coaches Corner and a Canadian icon, influenced a generation of hockey fans with his emphasis on accountability for players' actions and his belief that fighting made the game safer.
Despite some disagreement with his views, Cherry's impact on the sport is undeniable. Recently, the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League announced their decision to ban fighting beginning next season.
In a recent episode of the Grapevine Podcast, Cherry shared his thoughts on the ban and referenced former player Bobby Nadeau's surprising comments.
Nadeau, who was famously attacked by Patrick Roy's son Jonathan during a game in his Juniors career, expressed concerns that removing fighting from the game could actually make it more dangerous if other violent plays were not addressed as well.
Here is what Don Cherry had to say in regards to Nadeau's comments:
He got the heck kicked out of him so they thought 'This is a good guy to talk to because he would be against fighting' but he was pretty good. He said 'This could lead to more vicious play', and the other thing he said was 'Will lead to players feeling more brave with their stick' and nobody expected him to be the guy [to take that position.
