Former NHL Referee Files a Complaint To The NHL DoPS After Disgraceful Verdict
Tim Peel is one of the more infamous referees to work in the NHL. The veteran official was fired early after he was caught on a hot mic making up a penalty call to make up for an earlier mistake. Now he's chiming in with his opinion on the NHL's Department of Player Safety.
Former NHL Referee Criticizes Department of Player Safety
Typically, when fans complain about the DoPS, it is because of their inconsistent rulings as they often ignore plays altogether while awarding fines or suspensions for minor infractions. This time, the league office is getting criticism for their decision to suspend Coyotes forward Jason Zucker for three games for boarding Nick Cousins. Former NHL referee Tim Peel was not a fan of the move.
Is it April Fools! This is a joke that Jason Zucker has been suspended for 3 games!#Yotes Nick Cousins has hit two guys from behind with no repercussions the past 2 weeks! #TimeToHunt Cousins took advantage of an unsuspecting player. Awful by the @NHLPlayerSafety
Peel went on to explain in the comments that Zucker's actions were probably suspension-worthy, but Cousins should have gotten punishment for a different play in the same game.
I'm not saying he didn't deserve a game but Cousins doesn't get anything. WTF!
At this point, the Department of Player Safety is a joke to just about everyone in the hockey world outside of the NHL front office themselves. It should come as no surprise that even former league officials are criticizing them. Perhaps this criticism will make the league reconsider since it is coming from one of their own.
