Recently news of a former Canucks promising prospect being arrested came to light. The charges have finally been released and the case is shocking.
Canucks Prospect Arrested
A report from Wednesday confirmed that former Canucks top prospect Prabhraj (Prab) Rai had been arrested. He is the suspect in a major financial crime scandal that lost several people millions of dollars.
"Police believe that Rai committed large-scale financial fraud between Oct. 9, 2015 and July 20, 2018."
"He has been released by the courts on conditions pending his next court appearance." - Vancouver Sun
Rai reportedly tried to use his hockey platform and connections as a way to convince people to allow him to use their money for real estate.
Rai also faced allegations of defrauding a realtor of more than $2.8 million in a civil lawsuit according to an article written by Keith Fraser in the Vancouver Sun on August 29, 2022 . The realtor reportedly claimed that Rai positioned himself as a «successful and wealthy business person» with «important connections with prominent local and international business people and retired hockey players.»
Rai's predicament comes after a sad and complex career that went from top prospect to just hanging on to the dream.
Rai's Unfortunate Hockey Luck Leads To A Life Of Deception
Prab Rai was selected in the 5th round of the NHL Draft by the Canucks. Once he was drafted Rai took off with the Seattle Thunderbirds and earned himself an NHL contract.
Just months after this monumental moment in his career, Rai was in a severe accident that left him unable to play hockey for over a year.
After missing an entire season Rai made a comeback in the ECHL playing 24 games. After 7 games the following season, Rai missed yet another season.
In one final attempt to play the game he loved Rai played 7 games in 2014-15 before retiring. After his retirement, he evidently got into real estate which has led to his legal troubles. Rai is a cautionary tale of what can happen after a player retires whether by their own choice or not.
