It's been over half a month since the start of free agency, and when it started, Klingberg was the best defenceman available. Klingberg was coming off a 47 point season and the 29 year old was hoping to hit it big on what was most likely going to be his last long-term contract.
It was over 2 weeks into free agency when Klingberg fired his former agent as he was clearly unhappy. He was advised to turn down an offer from the Dallas Stars early last season and it took weeks of being a free agent and hiring new representation to finally get a contract.
Before the Christmas break last season the Stars offered Klingberg an 8 year deal valued at $58,000,000. His agent adviced him to decline and hold out for a deal worth $64 million, which never came for him unfortunately.
When free agency began, he was looking for a deal apparently worth $42 million over 7 years, which is a $14 million loss from what the Stars offered a half a year earlier. Unfortunately again for Klingberg, that offer never came.
In the end Klingberg ended up signing a 1 year deal with the Anaheim Ducks worth $7,000,000. Klingberg could have been $58 million dollars richer last Christmas but now he needs to settle with the 1 year deal and hope that teams are more interested in him next offseason.
