Beijing was likely Brad Marchand's final chance to compete as an Olympic athlete. When the NHL chose not to participate in the Pyeongchang Olympics it stole an all but guaranteed spot from Marchand to represent his country. So it's not surprising that the star forward is speaking out again after having the Olympic dream stolen from him a second time.
Marchand issued the following comments:
"I felt like they [the NHL leaders] were trying to get by for a while and they didn't want us to go. There should be a way to go and have that experience. Some people work their whole lives for it."
«I know that in the end, they don't care about the Olympics because it doesn't bring them money. It's a business and we are resources. Let's call a spade a spade. They don't want us to get hurt there, that's part of it, but it should be the player's choice to go to this tournament. "
«We are talking about the Olympic Games. They are the best in the world. If you've earned the right to go, you should be able to. It is very disappointing. "
The 33 year old Marchand will be 37 in 2026 when the next Olympics takes place and likely won't be under consideration for the Canadian Team at the time, so it's understandable that he feels like way, but he does appear to not blame the NHLPA for their part in this situation.
