As most teams start to shift their focus toward next season, the Rangers have some massive work to do. They currently have a gaping hole in their head coach position that needs to be filled, and have some big decisions to make in regards to their young guns. The first of those issues looks like it might be solved soon enough according to a new report, and the Rangers could have their newest head coach.
Peter Laviolette was most recently with the Washington Capitals but ended up getting fired after failing to make the playoffs this season. As the seasoned head coach enters the market for the first time in a while, his name was thrown onto New York's radar as they began their search for a new coach.
While Laviolette wasn't their first choice (Mike Sullivan was the favorite), he seems to have been pretty high up on their list of candidates, and with the way things have been progressing, could be named head coach soon.
While nothing is guaranteed at this point, and things could still change, Laviolette appears to be the clear favorite to land the New York coaching gig. He brings experience and a Stanley Cup-winning pedigree that would greatly benefit the Rangers as they look to bounce back from an embarrassing first-round exit.
Laviolette could be just what New York needs to elevate their game to the next level and become true cup contenders.
