Although Tortorella is a legendary coach and is the winningest in American history, he was not the first choice by the organization. The Philadelphia Flyers offered Barry Trotz a contract worth $7+ million, which would have made him the highest paid coach in league history, but he turned it down.
According to NHL Insider Darren Dreger, Barry Trotz was not the only free agent coach who was not interested in the Flyers.
Dreger mentioned on OverDrive that several coaches were in talks with the Flyers and would continue discussions, but the Flyers were no where near the top of their list.
According to @DarrenDreger on @OverDrive1050, several coaches told the #Flyers they were willing to talk but that the Flyers were not their "first choice." #BringItToBroad Anthony Di Marco (@ADiMarco25) June 15, 2022
The Flyers were a desirable team and a team you definitely wanted to be apart of just 10 years ago. What has happened?
Do coaches believe that they're very far away from a cup? Do they think the fall out last year was due to more than just injuries and COVID?
What is going to happen with this organization?
