Last night the New York Rangers hosted the Pittsburgh Penguins in Game 1 of their Eastern Conference matchup which the Penguins wound up winning the game 4-3 in the 3rd overtime period, but the game was not without controversy.
With the score tied 3-3 New York Rangers' forward, Filip Chytil thought he'd given the Rangers a 4-3 lead late in the third period. Unfortunately for Chytil the goal was ultimately called back for goaltender interference. On the play, Kaapo Kakko was crashing the net and collided with goaltender Casey DeSmith.
The referees took an extended time to review this play to make sure they got it right. Ultimately, they decided that Kakko did not make an effort to avoid contact with DeSmith. Therefore the play was ruled no goal as a result. After the call a New York Rangers Fan threw a beer at the NHL official Chris Lee who announced the no goal.
Rangers' fans were clearly incensed and as you can see by this one fans actions they weren't afraid to show it. One referee on the play was nearly struck by a beer can thrown from the stands.
The Pittsburgh Penguins would go on to win this one in triple overtime off a deflection by Pittsburgh Penguins Evgeni Malkin, 6 minutes into the 3rd overtime taking a 1-0 series lead.
