Alexander Ovechkin is one of the greatest players to ever put on skates. He has been blessing us with his goal scoring ever since he made his NHL Debut in 2005 and we've got to see him score 812 goals and 1464 points in 1326 games.
But over the past year, things have not been easy for the Great 8. When Russia invaded Ukraine, a lot of pressure was put on Ovechkin and criticism as well due to his past relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
A lot of people have been calling for the suspension of Russian players, primarily Ovechkin, and recently they've even tried to ban Russian players from playing in Canada.
Recently in a column with the Toronto Sun, Don Cherry defended Ovechkin:
He's a hockey player, he has nothing to do with the war in Ukraine. None of this is his fault. He's not involved in it.
It's the same crowd that went after me, they don't care about hockey, and it's not about hockey. Alex is a great player and great person, and he deserves better than to be treated like this.
It's all about how he is playing and this guy, as he goes for Wayne Gretzky's goal scoring record of 894, is playing hard.
Don Cherry was not always the biggest fan of Ovechkin, but over the years he grew to gain a lot more respect for him. So the support for Ovechkin coming from Don Cherry, means a lot.
