In recent weeks, disappointment has spread throughout the NHL as certain teams and players have made it clear that hockey is not yet an inclusive sport.
Specifically, Ivan Provorov, the Minnesota Wild, the New York Rangers, James Reimer, and now the Chicago Blackhawks have all chosen not to wear jerseys for Pride night.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the Blackhawks cited safety concerns for their three Russian players, Philipp Kurashev, Nikita Zaitsev, and Anton Khudobin, as the reason for not participating in the event.
The Blackhawks will not wear Pride jerseys for warmups on Pride Night on Sunday, per sources.
With three players of Russian heritage on the roster, safety concerns about a new Russian law banning "gay propaganda" prompted the decision.
It is important to note that the families of Russian athletes are not penalized for their actions abroad. Just last week, Alexander Barabanov, Nikolai Knyzhov, and Evgeni Svechnikov of the San Jose Sharks proudly wore jerseys for their Pride night.
