John Klingberg came into this offseason with a lot of hope for a large long-term deal, but quickly became disappointed with the results.

Last December Klingberg apparently turned down an 8 year deal from the Dallas Stars that had a cap hit of $7 million, because his agent believed he could get more. The camp went into free agency looking for a 7 year deal at around $8.5 million per season, which is a big chunk of change for a 30 year old, but he is a former 67 point scorer, so we've seen players get paid more for less (looking at you Skinner).

After weeks of disappointment, Klingberg fired his agent and under new representation signed a one-year deal with the Anaheim Ducks.

On this weeks 32 Thoughts Podcast, Elliotte Friedman stated that Klingberg was almost involved in a sign-and-trade with the Montreal Canadiens and Edmonton Oilers.

Before he ended up in Anaheim, I do think the Edmonton Oilers were looking at Klingberg and they were trying to do something with another team, potentially Montreal

Klingberg would sign there (Montreal) and then get traded to Edmonton. Montreal would have retained a bit and the Oilers would have added a sweetener and maybe they'd have to move a player or two. I do think that was talked about.

The Montreal Canadiens are in the midst of a rebuild, so it's unsure what they would have been looking for in return for taking on this cap hit, but Friedman mentioned that Jesse Puljujarvi may have been who the Canadiens were interested in.

When it comes to production, Klingberg has been one of the most consistent defenceman when it comes to offence since his rookie season in 2014-15.
