We are a few weeks away from training camp and the Maple Leafs might be a different looking team come the start of the season.
The Leafs lost some depth players in the offseason like Ilya Mikheyev, Ondrej Kase, Jason Spezza and a few others, but the most significant name they lost was starting goaltender and fan favourite Jack Campbell.
Going into free agency they needed to find a replacement and opted to make a trade with the Ottawa Senators to take on two-time Stanley Cup champion Matt Murray and sign Washington Capitals cast-off Ilya Samsonov.
While both of these goalies have huge potential, there is also a risk of huge failure as well, and apparently Kyle Dubas has already made some calls incase that failure happens.
According to Fanside's Editor In Leaf:
Don't be surprised to see Dubas make a run at Winnipeg Jet's goaltender, Connor Hellebuyck if Murray and Samsonov falter.
Hellebuyck, who has a Vezina, is 29 years-old, and has a contract of just over $6 million for each of the next two seasons, is a perfect candidate for the Toronto Maple Leafs.
He is cheap, he is not signed long-term, and his current team is garbage and doesn't look to be getting any better before he is an unrestricted free-agent asking for nine or ten million per season.
The Winnipeg Jets, like the Islanders, are in possession of a goalie who is going to price himself out of town before they can ice a contender around him. The obvious move is to cash in, and, should Matt Murray not pan out, look for the Toronto Maple Leafs to try and make a move in this direction.
James Tanner - Editor in Leaf If the Toronto Maple Leafs fail once again to make it out of the first round of the playoffs, this is most likely the end for Kyle Dubas. He knows his job is on the line and he is going to do everything he can to keep it.
