No parent wants to see their child get hurt, and that's exactly what happened to Connor Zary's mom on Tuesday night as the Flames took on the Ducks.
It was on a night that the Calgary Flames were hosting their annual moms' trip, with the players' mothers in town, that the unfortunate moment happened. Connor Zary seemed to injure his knee following a knee-on-knee hit by Ducks defenseman Drew Helleson.
The young forward fell on the ice in visible pain, grasping at his left knee. Thanks to teammates, Zary was able to get off the ice but couldn't put any weight on the injured leg.
The team announced during the second intermission that he would not return to the game. Drew Helleson was assessed a five-minute major penalty and a game misconduct on the play for kneeing.
The Flames' head coach Ryan Huska was obviously frustrated with the hit after the game but did not have any update regarding the status of Zary.
In response to the hit, Zary's teammates came to his defense. Jakob Pelletier took a two-minute minor for roughing in the ensuing scrum. The Ducks scored on the resulting four-on-four to tie the game 1-1.
Zary, 23, has been one of the bright lights for the Flames this season. In only his second NHL season, he had 10 goals and 12 assists through 39 games entering Tuesday's contest.
It remains to be seen whether the Department of Player Safety will be taking a second look at this as to whether a suspension or fine is warranted.
