McDonald's Canada has brought back its popular "Showdown" campaign with a new twist.
This new ad features Toronto Maple Leafs' Auston Matthews and Edmonton Oilers' Connor McDavid, following its 1993 NBA and 1997 NHL versions.
The campaign includes a one-minute and 13-second commercial and a limited-time "Showdown Menu" featuring six hockey-inspired items, such as the "Big Mac-David" and "Smoky Quarter Papi.
The ad features Auston Matthews and Connor McDavid having a light-hearted trick-shot competition, where both superstars perform crossbar challenges, bleacher shots, and even shoot the puck through a billboard of McDavid's face.
The highpoint of it all is McDavid, turning it up with a backhand, as the sound of Nickelback's 'Photograph' blasts on in the background and blurts, "You think this is a game, Papi?"
The playful rivalry ends with the two going inside McDonald's, agreeing to "take a break" and presumably enjoy the Showdown Menu.
McDonald's website leads off the campaign with "What a bunch of beauties" and encourages fans to choose sides, #97 for McDavid or #34 for Matthews, via their menu orders.
The commercial, which was released Tuesday after a teaser Monday, captures the spirit of the original campaigns. The stakes? A Big Mac, naturally.
The campaign is a nod to its 1997 predecessor featuring hockey greats Mats Sundin and Wayne Gretzky in a similar trick-shot showdown and a nod to the 1993 NBA classic with Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.
In the days and weeks leading up to the announcement, McDonald's, Matthews, and McDavid had teased the partnership through a series of cryptic social media posts.
The Showdown Menu will be available for a limited time beginning January 7 at participating restaurants, on the app, or via McDelivery.
