After each and every season, the NHL looks at ways to improve its league, and make any potential changes that could make it better for fans, players and owners. During the media tour, players were interviewed and asked their thoughts on specific things that the league offers and one of the questions was the current overtime structure.
The NHL got rid of the 'tie' and added in a shootout to make things more exciting, which fans seem to enjoy but not as much as they once did.
Recently the NHL brought in the 3 on 3 overtime, and again, this was exciting at first, you saw end-to-end action, and games ended quickly like the league hoped, but recently it has become more strategic and players often just circle back to their own zone hogging the puck the entire time.
But while this excitement has warn off, players still enjoy this more than a shootout, as multiple players have now voted to get rid of the shootout and continue with overtime.
Personally I would have to agree with the players. Watching a shootout is exciting if your team is good at them, but it gets rid of the team dynamic, which is what this sport is all about.
