Less than a heartbeat after the puck had dropped between the Vancouver Canucks and Washington Capitals, it was an outright brawl. The first period had barely gotten underway when things escalated to a full-on brawl.
The scrum started when Capitals forward Pierre-Luc Dubois issued a rough shove to Canucks captain Quinn Hughes along the boards. That was enough to light the fuse on a melee with players from both sides jumping in.
Connor McMichael and Kiefer Sherwood weren't about to hesitate to get their gloves off, and neither did veteran agitator Tom Wilson. As gear lay strewn about the ice, officials were at sixes and sevens to restore order.
When the dust finally settled, penalties were assessed: Dubois received minors for hooking and roughing, while Wilson and J.T. Miller, as well as McMichael and Sherwood, for that matter, were handed matching roughing penalties.
The Canucks found themselves on an early power play as a result, but the Washington Capitals penalty-kill unit held strong. The Canucks could not convert with the man advantage, and the successful kill gave Washington a boost of momentum.
Those were the fireworks setting up what ended up being a fierce battle between two teams neither willing to give in.
That ended up staying intense for the fans throughout the night as well, as the game went all the way to overtime with Washington getting the edge with a 2-1 win over Vancouver.
