Toronto Maple Leafs organization lose one of their goaltenders to serious-looking injury
Artur Akhtyamov was in goal for the Toronto Marlies last night when he went down with a serious injury and had to be helped off the ice, a serious blow to the team.
The Toronto Marlies had yet another setback on Wednesday night when they lost their game and one of their star goaltenders.
One of the most promising prospects of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Artur Akhtyamov, left the ice very late in the first period against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, and whatever reason it was, it remained unclear.
"I don't have anything. It's just lower-body, day-to-day," Marlies head coach John Gruden said post-game. "Haven't got any updates on his condition."
The 23-year-old netminder, who has been rock steady for the Marlies this season, looked hurt making a save on Penguins forward Ville Koivunen.
He gingerly made his way to the bench and had to be assisted down to the dressing room, leaving many guessing about his condition.
Coach John Gruden stated that he did not see what had actually happened to Akhtyamov. His Marlies couldn't find any rhythm, though, with Matt Murray in goal.
He made 13 of 15 saves, but goals from Nikita Grebenkin, Jacob Quillan, and Fraser Minten weren't enough.
"You don't want to see anyone get hurt. Doesn't matter who it is. But I think with him, he's been a staple for our team. He's played very well, so it's tough to see him leave the game like that," Marlies captain Logan Shaw said after the 6-3 loss.
Akhtyamov's departure to injury is of particular concern as he has been a mainstay for the Marlies this year.
With changes to Matt Murray and Dennis Hildeby going back and forth between the NHL and AHL, Akhtyamov has been the reliable starter, posting nine wins, most among Marlies goaltenders, along with a .897 save percentage in 15 games.
The Marlies lost their fourth in a row to start 2025 and continued to struggle. They once again were hindered by poor special teams, failing to score on five power-play chances.
Things just got a little bit tougher for the club with Akhtyamov's status now in question.
