Kyle Dubas is on the final year of his contract and discussions for an extension have not been made apparently, which lack of playoff success is definitely a big factor.
Also with Auston Matthews only having one more year on his contract after this season, the Maple Leafs need to have some success to make him stick around.
The Maple Leafs are having a very good season so far, but their defensive core could always use improvements, especially on the right side. It's being reported that the Maple Leafs are interested in possibly trading with the Vancouver Canucks.
Sounds like the Toronto Maple Leafs have some interest in Tyler Myers from the Canucks. We'll see where it goes but the two sides have talked this week. @TheFourthPeriod mentioned on @NHLNetwork earlier today. Irfaan Gaffar (@irfgaffar) February 11, 2023
Myers is a former first round pick by the Buffalo Sabres, and Calder trophy winner as the leagues best rookie. The now 33 year old isn't the offensive player he once was, but he still provides some great defensive plays and is a monster on the penalty kill due to his size.
Toronto Maple Leaf fans have not responded well to this announcement:

Why would the Leafs want a bad, hugely overpaid 3rd pair defensemab? Praag Arya (@PraagAryaMD) February 11, 2023
We're looking for reclamation projects so Myers for Matthews (50% retained) and a 3rd seems about right. Andy Watt (@WattAWildWorld) February 11, 2023
every other fanbase in the league agrees that he'd be a perfect fit ryan 🛸 (@OTCeIIy) February 11, 2023
