Former Ottawa Senator Dmitri Filimonov tragically passes at 52 years old
Former Senators defenseman Dmitri Filimonov has sadly passed away too young today, as he was just 52 years old.
The former senator was initially drafted by the old Winnipeg Jets in the 1991 entry draft, but he was later traded to the Sens in a minor deal. It was a big break for the young blueliner as the trade gave him his first and only opportunity to play in the NHL.
Former Senators defenseman Dimitri Filimonov has passed away unexpectedly at the age of 52.
Unfortunately, Filimonov was not quite NHL caliber, as he spent the following two seasons split between the AHL and the IHL. After the short run in North America, he elected to return to Russia to play in the pro league there. This is before the establishment of the KHL.
Those of you who guessed Dmitri Filimonov are correct. He was Alexei Yashin's teammate for 3 straight seasons the first two with Moscow Dynamo and then they came to Ottawa together as NHL rookies in 93-94. Filimonov scored one career NHL goal and soon returned to Russia.
Surprisingly, footage of Filimonov's only career NHL goal has survived the test of time. It came against the LA Kings on December 13th, 1993.
