With the 4 Nations Face-Off underway, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman surprised a lot of people with an update about the collective bargaining agreement negotiations.

Gary Bettman, the NHL commissioner, has been in office for over three decades, working tirelessly for team owners and players, but every time fans are looking back on his professional achievements, the negative always comes up first.

While he caused three NHL lockouts due to tough negotiations between the league and the players association for collective bargaining agreements, he also did a lot of great things to make the sport great.

Now that he has announced his retirement plans, fans are eager to see what his final contributions to the league will be.

Yesterday, at the start of the 4 Nations Face-Off, Bettman held a press conference in which he showed that he truly cares for the league and the sport.

He talked about how he hoped for the negotiations for the next collective bargaining agreement to go smoothly and quickly, adding that "people won't even notice that we've done it."

Per Chris Johnston:

Fans, owners, and players all want to avoid another lockout, and Bettman seemingly wants the same thing.

In the same press conference, Bettman announced that best-on-best hockey will return every two years, much to the delight of all hockey fans.

«The plan is to have the best hockey in the world, every two years in February: the 2026 Olympics, the 2028 World Cup, the 2030 Olympics are confirmed, but the hope is then for the 2032 World Cup, the 2034 Olympics, the 2036 World Cup, and so on.

We'll see if this eventually leads to a permanent best-on-best calendar or not.»

He also confirmed that eight countries would take part in these events, likely involving Russia, Czechia, Switzerland, Slovakia, or Germany:

Even though Bettman did some questionable things in his tenure as the NHL Commissioner, he seems to be looking to end on a high note.
