The business of the NHL is seemingly booming at this point, with the salary cap heading upward for this current 2024/25 campaign as revenue continues to improve.
According to top Insider Elliotte Friedman, there were discussions in the league about hiking the salary cap by another $4-5 million next season, with the possibility of a jump much, much higher than that.
Recently, however, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman spoke on the report from Friedman, quickly shutting it down while stating that the NHL and the NHLPA have not had any discussions about it to this point.
It makes sense as to why Bettman would shut down a report about the salary cap before discussions between the league and the NHLPA have even begun, so fans and players will simply hope this is him shutting down the rumor, and not the salary cap rise itself.
In comparison to other top leagues in North America, players in the NHL are seemingly very underpaid, with top players in all three other top sports earning upwards of $60 million per season.
In the NHL however, we are yet to get a player that even earns $16 million per season, but if the salary cap and the business of the NHL continues to grow, it may just be a matter of time.
For now, though, we wait to see how negotiations play out between the NHL and the NHLPA, and if Friedman's report turns out to be true, it will be a huge win for the players.
