On Thursday, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman informed the executive committee that his retirement is on the horizon, and while he didn't give a concrete timeline, he stated that he had 'a couple of years' left in the role, informing them that they could start looking for his successor.
There have already been some intriguing names thrown into the hat for the new role, although the favorite for the role remains Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, who has been in his role under Bettman for some time.
However, a much more intriguing name has been suggested now by top NHL Insider Renaud Lavoie, who has singled out Detroit Red Wings legend and current General Manager Steve Yzerman as the perfect fit for the role.
While the business of the NHL is booming, the league would be wise to take a different approach to the new Commissioner, and given that Daly would likely be a carbon copy of Bettman in the role.
That wouldn't be the worst thing to happen to the NHL, as the league has expanded and grown its business immensely since he took over in 1993, but if they want to take it to the next level, a former player like Yzerman could be an incredible selection.
Ultimately, it's likely going to be a few more years until this becomes a serious discussion, with many former players turned GM/front office officials likely to become candidates for the role, but regardless, there's likely to be some major changes for the NHL moving forward.
