The offsides rule in the NHL has become one of the more controversial things about the NHL. There are constantly goals called back after controversial reviews, including one that we just saw today.

Sabres Overtime Goal Called Back For Offsides

The Buffalo Sabres were playing the Edmonton Oilers this afternoon when the game went into overtime. Nothing was out of the ordinary yet. With time winding down, the Sabres made one last rush up the ice, entering the Oilers zone. Then Sabres defenseman Owen Power ended the game with 2 seconds left on the clock, ending the game. Or so we thought.

Sabres Win In Shootout After Overtime Goal Called Back

The play would later go to review with the linesmen checking to see if the play was offsides. Because the play happened with less than a minute left in the game, the review was initiated automatically by the league. Even the Oilers failed to notice that the play was offsides as both teams left the ice as they normally do following the end of a game in overtime.

Luckily for the Sabres, the events did not change the outcome of the game. After both teams returned there was less than 20 seconds put on the clock so the game naturally went to a shootout. The Sabres were able to pick up the win for real this time thanks to UPL's strong performance.

As seen on Referees force both teams to comeback onto the ice minutes after the game seemed over
