A shocking incident that occurred in November 2023 in Swedish hockey sent shockwaves throughout the hockey world. Casper Gillberg, during a game, slammed a referee into the boards, which eventually resulted in the official's broken arm. The aftermath of the event now sees a move to take it into the courts. Authorities have ruled to press criminal charges and the police are now involved.

Consequently, Gillberg was suspended for the rest of 2023 and all of 2024. In very recent times, he has received an extension in his suspension with it currently running to the end of May 2025.

Expressen.se reports that Gillberg has been charged with assault and prosecutors hope for the 22-year-old player to get a fine close to $3,000 USD. The player continues to plead not guilty due to self-defense.

It is unclear when he will go on trial. Casper Gillberg spent the 2021-22 season in North America playing for the Corpus Christi IceRays of the NAHL, following which he went back home and started his career with his local club in Sweden.
