This past Sunday, the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears had their annual Teddy Bear Toss and raised a new world record for most stuffed animals donated at one hockey game.
A staggering 102,343 stuffed animals were collected from the 10,514 fans in attendance, benefiting 35 local and regional organizations.
Among these were Schreiber Pediatric, Vista Autism Services, Middletown School District, Gigi's Playhouse Lancaster, Central PA Food Bank, Off the Streets, Palmyra Lions Club, Milton and Catherine Hershey Schools, and the Autism Society Greater Harrisburg Area.
When team veteran and forward Michael Sgarbossa scored his team's opening goal, a sea of all shapes and sizes of stuffed animals was pitched onto the ice, a memorable sight that sent the rink into an unending heap of plush toys, among which players threw themselves in glee, like so many kids piling into the bottom of an autumn leaf heap.
What a tradition! It's great to witness the Bears continuing their outreach into their community with such an incredible gesture.
A big round of applause for the amazing work of a local teenager, Gabby Kerchner, for the charity named Gabby's Acts of Kindness.
She donated over 40,000 for this year, adding to a family total of more than 125,000 donations in the past ten years. That is inspiring! Here's hoping more teams around the AHL and even the NHL one day adopt this famous teddy bear toss game.
