NHL Confirms Coyotes Will Stay In Arizona Next Season
Deputy NHL Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed today that the Arizona Coyotes will be staying in the grand canyon state at least one more season. This comes after the team has failed to secure a new home several times.
NHL Insider Provides Update On Coyotes For 2024-25 Season
The future of the Arizona Coyotes has been up in the air for longer than most hockey fans would care to admit at this point. The team remains in perpetual crisis as they continue to struggle to find a permanent home in Arizona. However, the commissioner's office did provide an update on the team yesterday, providing some short-term clarity for the franchise.
Bill Daly, asked if the NHL would have time to pivot and have the #coyotes play somewhere other than Arizona next season if Alex Meruelo doesn't win June's land auction: "Probably not."
Seems to be an indication they're likely to remain where they are for 2024-25.
Both Bill Daly and Gary Bettman declined to define any kind of deadline on a possible #coyotes relocation decision. But Daly did mention "it's getting late."
Friedman Gives Coyotes Dedicated Segment On 32 Thoughts
Another NHL insider that has covered this story since its inception is Elliotte Friedman. Yesterday, Friedman addressed the update for the Arizona Coyotes with an in-depth segment on 32 thoughts. He came to the same conclusions as Johnston and other insiders, but added that the NHL could potentially step in should something go wrong with the upcoming land auction.
Some of my tin-foil-hat wearing friends took time away from their Kate Middleton watch to say they interpreted Daly's comment to mean that, if the NHL sees any concern prior to June, they might decide on a move before the auction date. I include that because I do think the league is working on contingencies in case something strange happens.
But I do believe the preferred path is to see how the auction unfolds what must be done with the land, if Meruelo faces competition, and if he wins, as he is determined to do.

At this point it would seem that everyone outside the NHL front office is just waiting for this saga to end. However, with these recent comments, it seems even the NHL is starting to lose their patients. Hopefully this means we get some closure some time soon.
