The Buffalo Sabres have been a team on the rise for a few years now, and it was the trad of Jack Eichel to the Vegas Golden Knights that perhaps triggered the optimism that we see in Buffalo now. It was in that deal that the team acquired Peyton Krebs, and after months following his rejection of his qualifying offer, he was inked to a two-year deal worth $1.45 million per season.
However, things almost turned out incredibly different, with Sportsnet's top insider Elliotte Friedman recently revealing that Krebs was almost involved in a blockbuster trade at some point this off-season.
After scoring just 17 points in 80 games a year ago, it's clear that Krebs isn't yet ready to live up to the expectations, but with Buffalo extending him two years, they have plenty of confidence that he can one day grow into a great NHLer.
It wasn't revealed just what team was targeting Krebs and what price the Sabres were getting in return for the 23-year old, but the Sabres willingness to listen may ultimately mean trade talks begin again one day. For now however, he's set to anchor one of the bottom-six lines in Buffalo's lineup, as the Sabres look to finally break the NHL's longest Stanley Cup Playoffs drought.
