An NHL insider recently sent shockwaves through the NHL when it was announced that the Blackhawks could be looking to trade their star defenseman.

NHL insider Frank Seravalli hinted at the Chicago Blackhawks putting one of their defensemen on the trading block in the current season.

Seth Jones could be on the move

On Monday, during 'DailyFaceoff Live', Seravalli included Seth Jones on a trading target list with Brandon Tanev and Brock Nelson.

Jones's high salary cap hit and the poor performance of the Chicago Blackhawks who are the Central Division's bottom feeder have been discussed by Seravalli as factors for a move.

«When you look at Seth Jones' deal - nine-and-a-half million bucks AAV, the perception of that deal changes if three years from now we're talking about 113-and-a-half million bucks," Seravalli said. "He's a good defenseman, but he's an overpaid defenseman right now.»

Jones is under a seven-year, $76 million contract with the Blackhawks through 2030.

Despite poor performances at the team level, Jones continues to be one of its most consistent performers, and according to Seravall, that's a big attraction for playoff-bound teams in search of a talented two-way blue liner for years to come.

«He also has been put in a position where he's been playing 25 minutes and 18 seconds a night in four years for the Blackhawks,» Seravalli said. «He doesn't have any help. He's asked to do way too much. And, oh, by the way, he has nothing to play for.

The Blackhawks' season has been over by the time you get to the end of training camp. That's really tough for anyone in a competitive environment. So I do think that the Blackhawks are open to being creative and to try and figure out a solution here.»

For playoff-bound teams in search of a talented two-way blue liner for years to come, Jones is definitely a consideration worth taking seriously, per Seravalli.
