This season, the Colorado Avalanche have dealt with a ridiculous amount of absences, with upwards of seven forwards already missing time as they scramble to stay alive early in the year. With the returns of Artturi Lehkonen and Valeri Nichuhskin, things appear to be settling down up front, but now they have a fresh new injury issue to deal with.
According to Head Coach Jared Bednar, superstar defenseman Cale Makar is now a game-time injury for their latest matchup with the Winnipeg Jets, and given the role he's played in keeping this team competitive, this is perhaps the biggest loss thus far if he does miss time. Given that he's considered a game-time decision, there's likely little fear of him missing significant time, but with all of the absences, even a short time away would be a major issue.
In a video posted to social media, you can see Makar clutching at his leg as he glides towards the bench, and given how dangerous non-contact injuries can be, it was a major worry for the organization. Thus far in 2024/25, Makar has tallied an incredible 23 points in just 13 games played, and while Nathan MacKinnon is a huge star for this team, it's safe to say that Makar remains their most important player.
Keep a very close eye on this situation, as a Makar absence for a lengthy period of time could spell the end of the Colorado Avalanche's Stanley Cup hopes, but if he can get back on the ice along with Jonathan Drouin, Gabriel Landeskog, and Ross Colton, this team could turn into a juggernaut in the Western Conference as the season rolls on.
