Back in August of this year, Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau were simply out biking ahead of their sister's wedding when the unimaginable happened, as both were struck by a Sean Higgins, ending their lives. This was met with incredible sorrow and support from the entire hockey and sporting world, as the brothers will truly be remembered forever for their contributions to the world both on and off the ice.
The man accused of this heinous act, Sean Higgins, appeared in court for the first time today, with the family coming face-to-face with him for the first time after all his correspondence thus far has come via video.
Higgins will continue to be held without bail, and if found guilty, he faces up to 20 years in prison after police allege he had upwards of six beers before getting behind the wheel, while also having a history of road rage and aggressive driving.
Despite this, Higgins' defense continues to claim that he simply made a horrible mistake that night, but given that it cost two families their incredible brothers, sons, and fathers, the hope is that he faces swift justice for his actions.
The latest appearance in court was to extend the filing of the Grand Jury indictment for 30 days, while Higgins will continue to remain behind bars until his official trial begins. We can't imagine the incredible pain that the family has already been through this year, and with this now happening it's not going to end anytime soon, so we send our wishes to the entire family as they look to get through this period of their lives that will unfortunately be remembered forever.
