Jim Matheson, a well-known writer who covers the Oilers, has reported that Rodrigue has taken a job with the Florida Panthers coaching staff. However, it's not certain if his role will have him stay in the AHL or be promoted to the NHL to work with Sergei Bobrovsky.
Sylvain has done some fantastic work in the Oilers minor league system, developing goalies like Stuart Skinner, Calvin Pickard, and even his son, Olivier Rodrigue. All three of these goalies saw significant improvements in their games while being coached by Rodrigue, with Skinner becoming a solid NHL starter, and Rodrigue poised to make the jump to the NHL roster sooner rather than later.
Many Oilers fans may have been hoping that Rodrigue would be replacing current Oilers goalie coach Dustin Schwartz, who has been with the team since 2014. Schwartz has seen many goalies come under his tutelage, many of whom struggled mightily wearing an Oilers uniform. A chance of scenery at the goalie coach position could be what the Oilers need, and they let their top candidate go to the team that just beat them in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Oilers fans will be wishing Sylvain luck, but I'm sure many of them are also desperately hoping for some change when it comes to their NHL goalie coach.
