Shane Wright sat down for an interview with Sam Cosentino and said he's an amazing player, however, his stats have now proved otherwise.

During the 2022 NHL Draft, Shane Wright was hyped as the top prospect and pretty much everyone expected him to go first overall. He was seen as a once-in-a-generation talent, ready to make an instant impact in the league. But as the night went on, things took a surprising turn. Wright ended up sliding down the draft board, eventually landing with the Seattle Kraken as the fourth overall pick.

Fast forward two years and Shane Wright still hasn't secured a regular spot in the NHL. After getting a special exemption last season, he spent most of his time in the American Hockey League (AHL) before getting called up to the Seattle Kraken late in the season.

In his short time with Seattle, Shane Wright played eight games, scoring four goals and adding one assist. This limited playtime allowed the Kraken to extend his NHL contract, giving them full control of his rookie status for another three years. With questions growing about his potential, Wright chatted with Sportsnet's Sam Cosentino.

"I believe that's where I should go. I believe that I'm the best player. I believe that, you know, throughout my play, throughout my entire life, it has shown that I'm the best player, and I'm a competitive guy, and I want to be that spot, and I don't want anyone to take that from me, and I believe that I'm deserving of being that number one spot, and I believe that I'm going to be the first pick"

"I'm still a player that I should be. I'm still a generational talent."

When asked about his confidence, Shane Wright was firm in his response, saying that he still believes he is a top player who will eventually have his breakout moment. Despite the early hype, it's becoming less clear if he'll ever live up to those high expectations. He sounds a little too confident in his abilities despite not having yet been able to prove his worth in the NHL. The Kraken hope that day will come sooner rather than later.
